Experts Share Their Predictions for the MedTech Industry in 2012
Mon, Dec 19, 2011

In a recent editorial (“Blue Skies or Clouds Ahead for Medtech Industry? Experts Make Their 2012 Predictions”), Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry web editor Heather Thompson surveyed several leading experts in the Medical Device industry to get their opinion on the future of the medical device industry in 2012. Among the predictions? Greater opportunities to get involved in regulatory requirements and an increasing push towards a global perspective during the entire development process, to name a few.
Below are some article highlights. See if you can guess who said what! Experts consulted included a regulations expert, industry analyst, financier and a product design expert.

  • Resist the urge to cut expenses by cutting training. While finding ways to cut costs is always important, the most successful companies will do so without sacrificing well trained staff. Find ways to manage spending in ways that won’t affect quality and service.
  • Mergers and acquisitions will increase in the new year. The opportunity for mergers and acquisitions have grown as companies continue to look for ways to consolidate and cut costs. This trend is expected to continue into 2012.
  • Changes in FDA requirements will prove tricky for some companies. Paying careful attention to requirements updates during the design process will really pay off in the long run for companies that think ahead.

At KASO we're always interested in hearing news about new developments in the medical device market. Which is why we were particularly excited when we saw a recent Plasticsnews.com post that Penn State was opening its new Medical Plastics Center of Excellence, a 10,500 square foot facility created to help educate students and assist companies working to develop new medical devices and packaging.

Jason Williams, head of the new center, discussed the role the new facility would play in plastics medical device development: "Our mission is to partner with companies to maximize medical device performance and lower the cost of healthcare."

The Medical Plastics Center is part of an open lab initiative where members of industry and academia work together in order to share expertise and resources.
