An Update on Reshoring: Dissatisfaction Continues to Grow with Offshore Manufacturing

For decades, companies have turned to offshore manufacturing to meet shifting demands and cut production costs. Unfortunately, many companies are left feeling unhappy with their offshore manufacturing due to the often unpredictable and inconsistent quality of the items and components that are produced. This dissatisfaction has led to a shift among manufacturers who are beginning to consider reshoring to improve product quality.

The Problem with Offshoring

Much of the dissatisfaction with offshore manufacturing can be attributed to lackluster quality. Domestic manufacturing affords industries far more control over production. Not only are domestic manufacturing facilities more easily accessible to more closely observe production, it is also much easier for professionals to contact domestic manufacturers to discuss concerns, design changes, or other shifting needs.

Offshore manufacturing facilities can vary widely in quality, consistency, communication and production timelines. Quality is the first priority when it comes to manufacturing. Unfortunately, the primary challenge facing most industries is project cost. Despite the cost advantage offered by offshoring, many industries consistently favor domestic manufacturing because of the higher quality standards and outcomes. This quality advantage is especially important for the medical device and transportation and mass transit sectors, in which the quality of products has significant health and safety implications.

Trends in Injection molding, Thermoforming and More

In addition to the shifting attitudes about domestic manufacturing and offshoring, there are other changes in the outlook for plastic injection molding that businesses need to pay attention to. One of the most important trends in plastics manufacturing is the increased use of thermoforming. In many industries, use of thermoforming has climbed to between 30 and 40 percent of total plastics manufacturing projects, while injection molding has dipped slightly.

Another important aspect of plastics manufacturing is sustainability. Recycling is increasingly important to manufacturing professionals and more industries are seeking to move toward 100 percent recyclability. While the prioritization of 100 percent recyclability went down in 2018, this trend is on the rise again and is sure to be a persistent goal for industries in the coming years– and that is likely to shape manufacturing practices and processes.
